![]() When called upon its ability to render acoustics, point to point imaging and expanding the breadth of the soundstage never disappointed. Where the DTS:X presentation excelled was in the use of overhead sounds during the film’s musical set pieces. This is done to good effect when implemented and created an enriching level of immersion that coincides with the onscreen events nicely. In general, its use of audio objects placed above is limited to atmospherics and occasional panning fills. In listening to the DTS:X surround mix I found it to be of the moderately active, which considering the source material was quite welcoming. At the end of the day Pitch Perfect 3 is a pleasing and ultimately gratifying Ultra HD viewing experience. Resolution is excellent as the image is quite sharp, although the gap between it and the 1080p version isn't as wide as I'd hoped. The finale aboard the yacht in the harbor is the presentation’s highlight, as the nighttime setting made for a perfect backdrop. HDR is readily on display, especially during the daytime sequences. Whites appear gradational and punchy and blacks are uncompromised and delineated. With a noticeable uptick in detail and a boost to the film’s already oversaturated palate the image has ample pop that gives it a slight visual edge when compared to the 1080p version. This is a colorful film and this Ultra HD highlights that element. Pitch Perfect 3 comes to Ultra HD Blu-ray from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment featuring 2160pHEVC encoded video and lossless DTS:X/HD 7.1 Master Audio sound.įor its presentation in Ultra HD Pitch Perfect 3 (derived from a 2.8 K source) was rendered from a 2K DI and up-converted to 4K. Pitch Perfect 3 isn't a bad film, but as sequels go it just feels like a pointless installment, that, at the end of the day is forgettable. As for the additions to the cast, I did rather enjoy John Lithgow in the role of Amy’s father, who, provided many of the film’s best moments. The returning cast members fall right back into their respective roles and do well enough with what they are given to work with. The musical numbers are typically fun to watch and staged nicely. Here the storyline and newly introduced characters is less interesting, adhering more to attempting to ply the audience with slapstick, weak kneed romance, and ineffectual conflict, than well rounded characters, built around a rewarding storyline. ![]() This sequel, which brings back the cast from pervious the films, lacks the rewarding subplots and thematic balance that made the original film entertaining on several levels. Pitch Perfect 3 comes at you with essentially the same feel as it predecessor, which is a storyline built around a series of musical numbers featuring the cast in a competition, of sorts. I didn’t hold out much hope for Pitch Perfect 3, but, attempted to go in with an open mind. ![]() I was pleasantly surprised to find Pitch Perfect to be a charming, contemporary comedy that made for a 90 plus minutes well spent.Ģ015’s Pitch Perfect 2 was less inspired, felling like a bland rerun. That is exactly what you get here as the characters are well drawn and integrated via a decent script that contains some chuckle worthy moments, witty banter and several entertaining musical set pieces. I have no problem with conventional formulas as along as the characters are likeable and the narrative adheres to what works. On the inside the group struggles with issues both interpersonal and personal but as you might expect pulls together when it counts. Taking a page out of the popular (or once popular) Glee TV series the plot here is college based and similar revolves around similar archetypes striving to be more than what most see as geeky nerds. Pitch Perfect is as conventional a comedy as you will see both thematically and aesthetically. When Pitch Perfect debuted in 2012 I wasn't sure what to expect but after viewing it came away surprised. ![]() But when they get the chance to reunite for a European USO tour, this group of awesome nerds will come together to make some music, and some questionable decisions, one last time.
